The Advocates for Biodiversity Conservation (ABC) is a non-governmental organisation that promotes environmental sustainability and community development. On Friday, June 7, 2024, we call on all citizens to come out in their numbers to participate in Green Ghana Day by planting trees.
As the world celebrates World Environment Day, the call to action from ABC rings strongly, emphasizing the importance of Green Ghana Day as an opportunity for all Ghanaians to unite in safeguarding the environment.
The Program Manager of ABC, Mr. Abdulai Sulemana, who oversees land restoration projects, emphasized that as deforestation and land degradation continue to threaten our ecosystems, initiatives like Green Ghana Day are essential in reversing these trends, mitigating climate change, and preserving biodiversity.
People are increasingly curious to understand the impact of climate change on our environment, as well as the recent global warming and its effects on agriculture and health. Climate experts attribute these to human activities such as deforestation and greenhouse emissions. As L.I. 2462, in its current form, contradicts the Green Ghana initiative, ABC advocates for its revocation or amendment.
This underscores the urgent need to implement mitigation strategies like tree planting to absorb atmospheric carbon emissions and reduce carbon footprints. Trees as nature’s carbon sinks, are essential for creating a sustainable future
We therefore appeal to the public to partake in this project. Let us share this message and inspire all to recognise the importance of being an environmental steward.
Together, we can all make Green Ghana Day a remarkable success and set an example for other nations to follow. Happy World Environment Day and see you on Green Ghana Day! Let's plant for a brighter tomorrow.
